Director, Head of Risk Detection

Overview

We are looking for a driven and capable person to join us in this important mission as the Director, Head of Risk Detection. This important role will be at the intersection of WePay’s unique value propositions around innovative risk management and customer intimacy. This person will be responsible for developing the strategic plan for risk detection as well as leading the team on risk detection efforts in loss mitigation and identifying suspicious activity while providing an optimal user experience.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Develop the next-gen strategy for risk detection related to financial risk and AML; Own actions and deliverables related to the multi-year strategy that can enable and support WePay’s exponential growth seamlessly and more efficiently
  • Provide thought leadership on risk management to various stakeholders within the company
  • Collaborate closely with product and engineering teams on initiatives such as sourcing relevant data sources or feature engineering, rules engine development, and other risk mitigation efforts such as mitigating account takeover risk
  • Partner with data scientists to identify and scope out problems, evaluate the machine learning (ML) models for deployment readiness, and test/deploy ML models for effective and efficient risk mitigation
  • Work closely with policy colleagues to develop and deploy quantitative policies related to risk management and detection of suspicious activity
  • Partner with risk & compliance operations teams on the rollout of new strategies/models/rules, as well as evaluate and improve the efficacy of the current set of rules
  • Analyze and investigate emerging loss trends and large losses to come up with a post-mortem and action plan for implementation. Directly responsible for keeping the loss rates below the committed goal
  • Lead the team of detection managers/analysts, guiding them on their efforts and long-term career planning
  • Mentor risk analysts and junior members of the team on data analysis, SQL skills, and strategy development towards helping them grow their career within WePay

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Solid expertise in the trust & safety space, preferably in payments fraud prevention and/or seller risk management
  • 6+ years experience in designing scalable analytical strategies to fight fraud or other suspicious activities with demonstrable results
  • Strong understanding of machine learning models and how they can be applied to solve business problems. Preferably hands-on experience in building machine learning or other analytical models
  • Experience automating model/rule-driven actions with effective monitoring
  • Rule writing experience
  • Highly skilled at working with various internal stakeholders – communication, collaboration, drive for results and influence
  • Experience managing people and helping direct reports progress in their career
  • Strong business acumen
  • Data-driven decision maker
  • A hands-on leader who is willing to go the extra mile to get things done and help other team members
  • Problem solver who is creative in applying risk technology and other available tools
  • Experience working in fast-paced, high-growth environment
  • Strong team player
  • Expert SQL / data analysis skills
  • BS required. Technical degree or MS/MBA/ Ph.D. a big plus
